The downside of wget is the lack of parallel connections. Never test only from the same site as this can be affected by your distance to it, any problem in the server and the connections to it, etc. You need to have at least 4 or 5 different testing sources to have a more accurate speed. This will help you have a more accurate check. You need to do the test at least 5 times to have a reliable speed check or at least do it for a minute or two. If your connection is 512KB and the place where you are downloading is 400KB, your max connection will be 400KB because it is the max for the server you are downloading from. The highest speed you will see is the maximum speed that your connection and the server's connection can offer. In the case of my link the speed is less than 200KB so if you have a higher speed, the server will be the bottleneck for you, not your actual speed. Of course there are several recommendations: Typing: wget would start to download the Ubu1.avi file and show at what speed it is downloading. To use it just point to a file in internet that is relatively bigger so that you can get a better estimate of it. That little tool tells me nicely what speed I have. Update in 2022: sudo apt install speedtest-cli Using pip install -user speedtest-cli gets you a version that is probably newer than the one available from your distribution's repositories. For Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial) and later use: sudo apt install speedtest-cli Speedtest-cli is in Ubuntu repositories now. Hosted by FiberCloud, Inc (Seattle, WA) : 44.028 ms The short version is this: (no root required) curl -s | python. I created a blog post ( Measure Internet Connection Speed from the Linux Command Line) that goes into detail of downloading, installing and usage of it. I recommend the speedtest-cli tool for this. Run multiple tests automatically - any number of tests from 1 sec to 24 hrs apart *.Network Scan (see other devices on your network, keep notes about them, etc.) *.View/Edit Log built right into LAN Speed Test *.Option to log Avg, Max, & Min automatically *.All entries are SQL compatible for easy importing into SQL Server, MySql, etc.) * csv file with user configurable file location. Email results manually, automatically, or only when under a certain speed *.Ability to view results as Gbps, Mbps, Kbps, GBps, MBps, or KBps *.Ability to view each packet's results in a chart or by details *.Ability to choose Network Interface Card for computers with multiple NICs.Progress bar and cancel button allowing user to cancel at any time.View results by Average, Maximum, and Minimum throughputs *.Chunk size adjustable up to 1 MB (for advanced testers).Packets up to 9 GB in size and up to 1000 packets *.LAN Speed Test and LAN Speed Test (Lite) are now the same download.Compatible with Mac 10.7.5 (Lion) or later.Compatible with Windows 7 or later and Windows Server 2008 or later. Can be run from a hard drive, USB Flash drives, Network Share, etc.Completely Portable - No installation needed.Very fast! Most tests are less than 1 minute.Compatible with LST Server (v1.5 or later) for real network performance results without hard drive limitations – Even test your WAN (Internet) speed with LST Server.Test the speed of your local drives (USB Drives, hard drives, etc.).Test the speed of your Local Network by testing to/from network shared folders. Some of LAN Speed Test v4 features include. You'll find that LAN Speed Test will quickly become one of your favorite network tools! For more advanced users, you can test to LAN Speed Test Server instead of a shared folder to take the slower hard drives out of the process as you are testing from one computer's RAM to another computer's RAM. Next, LAN Speed Test builds a file in memory, then transfers it both ways (without effects of Windows/Mac file caching) while keeping track of the time, and then does the calculations for you. to test the drive speed, or a shared folder on your network to test your network speed. This folder can be on a local drive or USB drive, etc. LAN Speed Test was designed from the ground up to be a simple but powerful tool for measuring file transfer, hard drive, USB Drive, and Local Area Network (LAN) speeds (wired & wireless). only some of the more advanced features are disabled. LAN Speed Test (Lite) is fully functional with no time limits, etc. After installing LAN Speed Test v4, it begins in (Lite) mode.
